Defrost Cycle Too Short

by Jason

Last winter my York heat pump was not going into defrost mode. I was able to force defrost by jumping the pins on the control board. Defrosting took quite a while so I called a tech to check the refrigerant level and it was low. He added R-410A to the system but I still had to force defrost although it was much quicker. I then tested the ambient/coil temperature sensor and it was bad. I replaced the sensor and defrost mode would work automatically. The ongoing issue I've had since replacing the sensor is defrost cycles that are too short. The cycles are generally less than 1 minute which does not melt the frost on the coil and fins. Any ideas? Thank you.
