heat pump making noise

goodman GPH1348H41DA
I BOUGHT THIS UNIT ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO. IT WAS HOT AT THE TIME, SO WE WERE USING THE A/C. WHICH WORKED GREAT. NO WEIRD NOISES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. WHEN IT CAME TIME TO USE THE HEAT, IT MAKES SOME LOAD NOISES. WHEN IT SHUTS DOWN, IT RUNS FOR A LITTLE WHILE, I GUESS ITS THE BLOWER FAN. BUT SOMETIMES BEFORE THAT SHUTS OFF IT WILL TRY TO RESTART, AND IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS FIGHTING AGAISNT ITSELF TO START AGAIN. IT WILL MAKE A LOAD HUMMING SOUND AND THEN A BIG CHIRP WHITH A THUD. THE FAN WILL MAKE A SPIN LIKE YOU SPIN IT WITH YOUR FINGER. THE PLACE THAT HOOKED IT UP, THE FIRST TIME WHEN THE A/C WAS ON, IT WOULD PUT OUT HEAT. HE DID SOME WIRING AND GOT THE A/C TO COME ON, SO I THOUGHT EVERYTHING WAS GOOD, UNTILL I USE THE HEAT NOW. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT HE LEFT WITH MY PAPER WORK THAT CAME WITH THE UNIT, SO I DONT EVEN KNOW IF I HAVE A WARRENTY... THANKS, MIKE

goodman unit Loud, noisy...
by: Anonymous

I have the unit heat pump/ac for almost 2 years. The unit is just noisy and each time it starts up makes a sound like a run down tractor. After that the fan is quiet. During this winter in PA the unit switched over to emergency heat because the unit is not able to handle cold below 10 Fahrenheit. I placed plywood about 12 inches away to outside unit and that helped to stop switching to "auxiliary" mode. And the wind, cold air did not hit directly the unit. The inside fan is loud and makes a drum sound when it starts up. I made the contract with the installer service, but after the first year of warranty period only the contract is honored for service, repair. Even with the $230 yearly charges for the contract does not cover everything!

Goodman
by: Service tech

You get what you pay for. Goodman is one of the cheapest kind of systems you can buy. Builders grade systems. But there again, you are lucky if you can go 5 years on any system with out having any problems or repairs big or small repairs. Trane and Lennox are 2 of the quietest systems you can but. But they are all going to have problems, that's why you need to have them serviced every six months, spring and fall to do PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE, catch big problems before they turn into very expensive problems. Average refrigerant repair is $1000 or more.

High EL bill from Goodman outside unit
by: Anonymous

My Goodman outside unit sounds like it is in pain like a raking sound at times. Now my EL bill has went up 3 times what it normally is. Any ideas what is causing the sound? Trying to figure out what repair costs would be before I call a technician - trying to advoid service call fee if I can't afford the repair right away. Thanks

goodman's unit

The unit is just noisy - when the AC starts up sound like a tractor in pain. When the heat comes on the sound is the same till the unit kicks in. The outside fan runs quietly after the AC comes on. The fan for heating inside - was more quieter last winter, 2014 winter the inside fan makes some noise sounds like the barrings are wearing out. Did not call the service, wait till gets worse. The service registers your unit with goodman. The service people wants to hold on to your business and once the service installed the unit you are stock with them for warranty. I am in the same boat with many others. I wait till the unit dies on me and will replace it with a quiet unit that will have less than 71 noise level. Watch the digital thermostat. Mine had cold air coming in be-hide the wall, I plugged in the hole where the wire was attached to the unit, after that no "emergency heat" came on. Also keep the fan on "auto" mode.

Goodman suppose to come with 10 yr warranty. BUT you must read and check their site for details. Also I have to have a service contract with the installer in order to honor the warranty - Also your unit must be registered with Goodman, visit online site. My unit is noisy like a tractor when it starts up, in this cold (PA) emergency heat came on very often then it switched back to HEAT ON mode. Watch out for the thermostat, many times that can be a problem too however Goodman units are just noisy as they say it on their online site: 71 decibel, which is like an orchestra starting up loud right next to you.
