Heat Pump Will Not Start

Potential solutions to the following five heat pump problems are found in the tables below:

"The Heat Pump is On, But There is No Cooling"
Possible Reason Possible Solution
Dirty indoor coil Clean the coil
Dirty filter Clean or replace filter
Indoor fan problems Check proper operation of the indoor fan. Ensure the belt is not slipping
Thermostatic expansion valve not operating correctly Ensure bulb is tight on the piping and that the superheat setting is correct for the system.
Leaking reversing valve Replace
Leaking suction or discharge valves Replace valves or compressor if necessary
Non-condensables exist in the system Remove refrigerant, cleaning piping, and replace with clean refrigerant
Some restriction in the refrigerant piping Do a visual inspection. Carefully check the temperature of the piping to determine if flow is being restricted where it should not be.
Low on refrigerant Check for leaks, repair the leak, and replace with the full amount of refrigerant.
"There is Too Much Cooling"

Electrical Problems Check wiring and terminations for accurate thermostat and compressor communication
Bad thermostat Replace
Temperature Sensor or thermostat location is poor Change location
"The System is Experiencing Liquid Flooding"
Possible Reason Possible Solution
Wrong superheat setting Adjust superheat using the thermostatic expansion valve adjustment head
Thermostatic expansion valve not operating correctly Ensure bulb is tight on the piping and that the superheat setting is correct for the system.
Bad check valves Carefully check the temperature of the piping on both side of important check valves. This shall determine if any check valve is leaking.
Too much refrigerant in the system Remove refrigerant
Head pressure is too high Determine the cause (eg. dirty condenser coil, improperly operating condenser fan/pump, etc.)
Indoor filter is dirty Clean or replace the filter
Indoor coil is dirty Clean
Indoor fan problems Fix a slipping belt or other fan motor issue
Bad check valves Replace

Air flow problems Determine is the ductwork size or a certain restriction is reducing the air velocity
